Enphase IQ Battery: why isn't my battery discharging? Storm Guard & modes

An IQ Battery that stays full at night may be saving energy for backup rather than experiencing a fault. Its behavior depends on your energy profile, backup reserve, schedules, and whether Storm Guard is active.

Check the Enphase app

  • Full Backup: Prioritizes keeping energy available for an outage instead of using the battery for everyday home loads.
  • Self-Consumption: Uses stored energy to help power your home, while preserving the configured backup reserve.
  • Savings / tariff-based operation: Charging and discharging follow your electricity rate schedule, so the battery may wait for a scheduled period.
  • Backup reserve: A high reserve limits how much energy the battery can use while the grid is available. At the reserve level, it can stop discharging normally.
  • Storm Guard: On supported systems, a qualifying weather alert can temporarily prioritize backup readiness and hold charge. Check the app for an active Storm Guard notification. Availability and grid charging depend on your configuration and local rules.

What to do next

  1. Record your active profile, reserve percentage, battery charge level, and any Storm Guard or battery alerts.
  2. Check whether the app shows a current reading or stale data (KM-518). Menu and profile names vary by system and app version.
  3. If you want nighttime battery use, review the available homeowner profile settings. Lowering the reserve leaves less energy for an unexpected outage; ask us if you are unsure.

Do not disable storm protection just to force discharge during severe weather. If the battery is above its reserve, no backup hold or schedule explains the behavior, or it shows an error, call or text us at 806-454-7873. Backup operation also requires the appropriate system equipment — a battery icon alone does not confirm whole-home backup.
